Adults are found in mangrove swamps and river estuaries, but more often in freshwater lakes. Benthic. The size and shape of the mouth, the presence of large canine teeth suggest that this fish is probably a predator on small aquatic animals. Oviparous; eggs are demersal and adhesive, and are attached to the substrate via a filamentous, adhesive pad or pedestal. Larvae are planktonic, often found in shallow, coastal waters.
Two completely different aquariums: forest rivers with soft, brown water, roots and leaves, and Rift Valley lake cichlids in hard, alkaline water with big rock piles.
Two aquariums from Southeast Asia: calm forest streams and peat swamps with soft, brown water, and fast mountain streams with cool, oxygen-rich water.
The home of rainbowfish: water, substrate, plants and light for rainbowfish, blue-eyes and peacock gudgeons, with a long aquarium and open water in the middle.
From the store to the tank: how to get the fish used to your water, why you should add only a few at a time, and what to watch for in the first few days.
