Privacy
Last updated October 18, 2026
Akvarist is made by Birdbrain AS (Norwegian org. no. 938 182 574), which is responsible for the data about you. Send questions about privacy to [email protected].
What we store
- Your account: name, email address, language and time zone, and your profile picture from Google or Apple if you sign in with them.
- How you sign in: which Google and Apple accounts are linked, and your passkeys. Of a passkey we store only the public part; the secret one stays on your device.
- Your sign-ins: the IP address and browser of each sign-in, to keep you signed in and to notice misuse.
- What you enter: aquariums, species, water tests, water changes and notes, and a log of what has been done in the aquariums.
- Your suggestions for species data. We always store who suggested it, also when you choose not to be shown by name.
- The notifications we send you in the app and by email.
Why
We use the data to give you the service you asked for, on the basis of our agreement with you when you create an account (GDPR Article 6(1)(b)). We also use IP addresses and browsers to keep your account safe, which is our legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f)). We sell nothing, show no ads and use no analytics.
Who else sees anything
- Hetzner runs our servers in Nuremberg, Germany, where everything is stored.
- Cloudflare sends our email, and sees your email address and what the email says.
- Google and Apple, when you sign in with them.
- The other members of an aquarium see what you log there. A public aquarium can be seen by everyone signed in.
- When a suggestion of yours is taken into the species data, your name and profile picture show on the species page, both in the app and on this website, where anyone can see them. If you choose not to be shown by name, they show nowhere.
What your browser fetches from others
Some things in the app are fetched straight from other sites, which then see your IP address:
- Species photos from FishBase and Wikimedia Commons.
- Maps from VersaTiles and NASA.
- Profile pictures from Google, for those who sign in with Google.
How long
We keep your data for as long as you have an account. If you delete your account, we delete your aquariums and logs. Suggestions we have taken into the species data, and what you have logged in aquariums you share with others, stay without your name.
Your rights
- Under Profile in the app you can download everything we have about you, and delete your account.
- You correct your name and what you have entered yourself in the app. If anything else is wrong, ask us to correct it.
- You can complain to the data protection authority where you live; in Norway, Datatilsynet.
